What we treat
1. Wrinkles and fine lines
Although fine lines and wrinkles are a totally natural part of the skin’s ageing process, you can determine how quickly or slowly they progress.
What causes wrinkles and fine lines?
Wrinkles and fine lines are caused by the breakdown of collagen and elastin in the skin. Collagen fibres strengthen the skin, while elastin helps the skin stretch and return to its original shape. As we age, the body loses its ability to produce collagen and elastin.
While there’s no way to halt the ageing process entirely, cosmetic acupuncture may be able to help you slow down the process. Rather than freezing the muscle to prevent wrinkles from occurring, we work with the body, tricking the face into growing its own collagen and elastin in areas where it’s needed.
We do this with our special tiny needles, we create what we call a “positive micro-trauma”. By placing these needles in wrinkles and fine lines, the micro-traumas stimulate fibroblast production, which create collagen and elastin; the two vital structures for preventing fine lines and wrinkles from occurring. By taking the right steps now, you can help prevent your skin from further ageing, and maintain more of a healthy-looking, youthful appearance for longer
2. Sagging and loss of elasticity
Loss of elasticity in the skin is a natural part of ageing. While there are many factors that can speed ageing up, there are treatment options that can slow it down and repair some of its effects.
What causes sagging and loss of elasticity?
Sagging and loss of elasticity is caused by a loss of the protein, elastin. Elastin is what gives skin the ability to stretch and snap back into place quickly. As we age, skin elasticity weakens, giving the appearance of sagging, less firm and less youthful skin.
Similar to our wrinkle and fine line protocol, special needles are gently inserted into the face to create a positive micro-trauma. The wound healing response brings qi and blood into the treatment area and stimulates fibroblast production. Fibroblasts make elastic fibres, which come together with other compounds to give skin its bounce and support.
To achieve effective results, we focus on stimulating elastin production, the essential scaffolding of the face, to strength and tone saggy skin for a firmer and tighter look.
3. Preventative anti-ageing
One thing that we can’t change is the natural ageing process. We can however, slow it down. Have your heard of the saying, prevention is better than cure? Why not get on top of your skin before it becomes an issue.
What causes ageing?
Many factors cause our skin to age. Some things we can’t do very much about, while others we certainly can. Our genetics are largely responsible for the changes that occur with ageing. The medical term for this type of ageing is “intrinsic ageing” and this type of ageing is inevitable.
The other type of ageing is “extrinsic ageing”. Extrinsic ageing is caused by factors outside of the body which impact on the face. Extrinsic ageing is easier to control than intrinsic ageing.
We believe that you don’t need to wait for your skin to become problematic in order to seek out treatment. Our mantra is, prevention is better than cure. Why wait for your skin to become the very thing that you’re trying to prevent from occurring?
Our preventative anti-ageing treatment focuses on targeting the building blocks of your skin – collagen and elastin. The more building blocks there are, the stronger the foundation will be. A strong foundation is less likely to crack, or in this case, wrinkle and sag. Don’t wait for ageing to occur, let us help you maintain your youthful appearance.
4. Pigmentation and uneven skin tone
The appearance of your skin is important. Pigmentation and discolouration on the face can leave you feeling self conscious, and age your appearance dramatically. With our targeted cosmetic acupuncture treatment, we aim to fade the pigmentation, getting your skin back to a youthful and even complexion.
What causes pigmentation and uneven skin tone?
Our skin contains cells called melanocytes that produce a chemical compound called Melanin. Melanin is responsible for giving human skin its distinctive colour. Melanocytes produce melanin at a steady, consistent rate, meaning our skin tone is nice and even. Pigmentation occurs when these cells produce either too much or too little melanin.
To treat pigmentation and uneven skin tone, our treatment protocol directly targets the localised accumulation. Our special cosmetic acupuncture needles break up and disperse the stagnant area to reduce the appearance of uneven pigments. We draw fresh qi and blood flow into the area to give your face back its glowing, even complexion.
5. Dull and dry skin
If your face is looking dull, tired and dry, then chances are your skin isn’t receiving the right nutrients it needs be radiant and glowing.
What causes dull and dry skin?
Dull skin tone is typically a result of poor circulation. Certain triggers can deprive the skin of much needed oxygen and nutrients. Without them it can be left looking lustreless and dull.
You may be surprised to learn that skin is actually the single-largest organ in the human body. Like all other organs, it requires hydration to function. Without proper hydration, skin that lacks moisture will dry up and become withered, leaving your face to feel tight and uncomfortable.
We tackle dull and dry skin by inserting our special cosmetic acupuncture needles into problem areas of the face. The positive micro-trauma we create causes qi and blood to immediately flow into the local area. The increased circulation pumping through the region brings the oxygen, moisture, and nutrients your skin needs to look hydrated, youthful and glowing once again.
6. Tension in the face
They say that the face is the mirror of the mind. In today’s fast-paced, high demand society, tension and stress is more often than not, showing up on faces.
What causes tension in the face?
Tension is a natural occurrence in response to emotional or physical stress. We are equipped with a fight or flight system which causes our muscles to contract. If stress is maintained, your muscles can remain contracted too. Eventually, this can lead to the formation of myofascial trigger points (nodules that form in the muscle, also known as a “knot”). Trigger points cause the muscle to shorten, resulting in unwanted tension.
To effectively release facial tension, our special needles directly target the trigger point itself. The needle breaks up the knot, effectively relaxing and releasing the targeted muscle, taking additional stress off of the face. To reduce the likelihood of re-occurrence, our treatment plan also includes the use of traditional acupuncture points for anxiety and stress relief, to help turn that frown into a glowing and radiant smile.
Whether it’s acne scarring or scarring from an old injury, the marks left on your face can leave you feeling shy and less than confident.
What causes scarring?
A scar is an area of fibrous tissue that replaces normal skin after an injury. Scar tissue is made up of the same protein (collagen) as the damaged tissue it’s replacing. The only difference is, that instead of growing in a normal healthy formation, the collagen fibres cross link, forming a pronounced alignment in a single direction, creating the appearance of a scar.
To tackle scarring, we use our special needles, and insert them into, and around the scar itself. This minimally invasive procedure triggers the body’s wound healing response, forcing it to naturally produce collagen.
In a wound healing response, the skin will destroy the old, damaged tissue that caused the scar, and will replace it with freshly-produced collagen. This helps to reduce the appearance of the scar, giving you back the confidence to flaunt your flawless skin.
Acne comes in many shapes and sizes and can occur at different stages in life. Whether its teenage acne or adult acne, cosmetic acupuncture can be beneficial for reducing the appearance of acne and preventing scar formation.
What causes acne?
Acne is an inflammatory skin disorder. According to traditional Chinese Medicine principles, acne is caused by symptoms of Heat and Damp in the body. Heat causes inflammation, hyperactivity and over stimulation, while damp manifests as swelling, cysts, pimples, pus and fluid discharges.
We treat acne locally to break up congestion, reduce redness and reduce the overall appearance of blemishes. But we don’t stop there. For lasting results, we go that step further and find the underlying cause and treat it too. This prevents and reduces the chance of acne reoccurrence.
